Plugs & Sockets

Trailer plugs and sockets connect the electrical systems between a truck and trailer. They carry power for lighting, ABS, EBS, and other trailer functions needed for day-to-day operation. At MaxiPARTS, we stock a full range of trailer plugs and sockets from Narva and HELLA, including 7-pin DIN, 7-pin SAE, EBS plugs and sockets in 12V, 24V and 12/24V, plus heavy-duty 2-pole connectors for Australian truck and trailer applications.

Why trailer plugs and sockets matter

Truck and trailer electrical connections are exposed to vibration, weather, dirt, and constant use.

When a truck trailer plug is damaged or worn, it can cause lighting faults, ABS warnings, or intermittent electrical problems. In some cases, a simple connector fault can stop a trailer from being used until repairs are made.

Good quality trailer plugs and sockets help keep electrical systems working properly and reduce avoidable downtime.

Types of trailer plugs and sockets available

Different trailers use different connector types depending on the electrical and braking system fitted. MaxiPARTS stocks a wide range of trailer plugs Australia workshops and fleets use every day.

7-pin round plugs and sockets

The 7-pin truck trailer plug is commonly used for trailer lighting circuits. These connectors operate indicators, brake lights, tail lights, and reverse lights and are available in both DIN and SAE configurations.

EBS plugs and sockets

Trailers fitted with electronic braking systems use dedicated EBS connectors. We stock EBS plugs and sockets in 12V, 24V, and 12/24V configurations for a wide range of truck and trailer applications.

2-pole heavy-duty plugs and sockets

Where higher current capacity is required, 2-pole connectors are commonly used instead of standard lighting plugs. These connectors are often fitted to battery charging and auxiliary power circuits.

DIN vs SAE standards

Not all trailer plugs are wired the same way.

DIN connectors are commonly found on Australian and European vehicles. SAE connectors are more common on North American equipment.

Before replacing a truck trailer plug, always confirm which standard is fitted to the vehicle.

12V vs 24V trailer electrical connections

Heavy vehicle electrical systems typically operate on either 12V or 24V.

Before replacing an EBS plug or socket, check the voltage used by both the truck and trailer. Using the wrong connector can cause electrical faults and communication issues.

Choosing the right trailer plug or socket

A few simple checks can help you select the right connector.

• Confirm whether the system operates on 12V, 24V, or 12/24V

• Check whether the connection uses DIN or SAE wiring

• Choose a 7-pin plug for standard lighting functions

• Use an EBS connector where electronic braking systems are fitted

• Select a 2-pole connector for higher-current applications

Using the correct connector helps avoid fitment issues and unnecessary electrical faults.

Installation and maintenance tips

Regular inspections help prevent connection problems.

• Inspect plugs and sockets for corrosion, cracks, or damage

• Check terminals during routine servicing

• Replace worn connectors before faults develop

• Keep connections clean and dry

• Inspect associated wiring and suzi coils for wear

A few minutes spent checking connectors can often prevent larger electrical issues later on.

FAQs

What is a 7-pin trailer plug used for?

A 7-pin trailer plug is used to connect trailer lighting functions including indicators, brake lights, tail lights, and reverse lights.

What's the difference between DIN and SAE trailer plugs?

DIN and SAE plugs use different wiring layouts. DIN is commonly used on Australian and European vehicles, while SAE is more common on North American equipment.

What is an EBS plug and socket?

An EBS plug and socket connects the electronic braking system between the truck and trailer.

Do I need a 12V or 24V EBS plug?

The correct voltage depends on the truck and trailer electrical system. Always match the connector to the application.

Can I use a plastic 7-pin plug on a truck?

Yes. Plastic plugs are commonly used across many applications, while metal plugs are often chosen for harsher operating environments.
